Gluten-Free Greece
Greek food gives a coeliac a lot to work with: grilled meat and fish, salads, beans and yoghurt. The difficult parts are the pies, the flour-dusted fried food and the bread on every table. Athens now has several fully gluten-free kitchens, from a taverna by the Acropolis Museum to a pizza and wine bar in Koukaki, and Rhodes has a fully gluten-free cafΓ©. Every place below says on its own website or own page that it is gluten-free; we read each one on 28 September 2026.

Words that help: ΟΟΟΞ―Ο Ξ³Ξ»ΞΏΟ ΟΞΞ½Ξ· (choris glouteni, gluten-free) and ΞΟΟ ΞΊΞΏΞΉΞ»ΞΉΞΏΞΊΞ¬ΞΊΞ· (I have coeliac disease). Filo pies such as spanakopita and tyropita mean flour in the air at bakeries and tavernas, kritharaki (rice-shaped pasta) is wheat despite a name that sounds like barley, fried calamari and courgettes are usually dusted with flour and share the oil, and soutzoukakia often contain bread. Show our coeliac card in Greek and ask about the flour and the fryer.

Before you go
Kitchens change: menus, owners, fryers, staff. Evidence dates tell you when we last saw proof, not what is true today. Always confirm directly with the venue at the time of your visit, say explicitly that it’s coeliac disease, and trust your own questions over any listing, including ours.
