Is oat milk gluten-free? Only if the pack says so
Only when it’s labelled gluten-free. Oats themselves don’t contain wheat gluten, but most oats are grown and milled alongside wheat and barley, so ordinary oat milk can carry gluten.
What to check
- The label: choose oat milk marked gluten-free. In the EU and UK that means oats produced to stay at 20 mg/kg or less.
- A small number of people with coeliac disease react to avenin, the protein in oats itself. If oats don’t agree with you, talk to your doctor or dietitian.
- In cafรฉs: “oat” on the menu doesn’t say which brand. Ask whether it’s a gluten-free oat milk, or pick another milk.
