Is mustard gluten-free? Usually, but some contain wheat flour
Usually, yes. Mustard is made from mustard seed, vinegar or wine, water and salt, and mustard seed contains no gluten.
What to check
- Some mustard powders and English-style mustards contain wheat flour. It’s named on the label, so read it.
- Beer mustard and mustards made with malt vinegar contain gluten unless labelled gluten-free.
- Honey mustard dressings and mustard sauces can be thickened with flour.
Mustard seed itself is also a separate allergen in the EU and UK, which is why you’ll see it highlighted in ingredient lists. That’s about mustard allergy, not gluten.
