Gluten-Free Freiburg: A Dedicated Bakery and Black Forest Tips (2026)

UPDATED=2026-07-31READ=5 MINREVIEW=HTGF EDITORIAL

Freiburg is Germany’s sunny corner β€” a green, walkable university city on the edge of the Black Forest, famous for its cobbled BΓ€chle streams and its love of all things organic. That eco-minded streak works in a coeliac’s favour: for a city this size, Freiburg punches above its weight, with a genuinely dedicated gluten-free deli-bakery and a handful of kitchens that take coeliac diners seriously.

This is a compact, hand-picked shortlist β€” Freiburg is a smaller scene than Munich or Cologne, so we’ve kept it to the places we can stand behind, each cross-checked against its own listing and recent coeliac reports on 1 August 2026. As always, a written protocol is a starting point, not a substitute for a quick word when you order.

How gluten-free works in Germany

Germany follows the EU rule: anything labelled glutenfrei must contain no more than 20 ppm of gluten (Regulation (EU) 828/2014) β€” the same legal bar as a “gluten-free” label in the UK or Ireland. The national coeliac association is the DZG (Deutsche Zöliakie-Gesellschaft). Two phrases will carry you a long way:

  • “Ich habe Zöliakie und kann kein Gluten essen” β€” “I have coeliac disease and can’t eat any gluten.”
  • “Ist das glutenfrei? Wie sieht es mit Kreuzkontamination aus?” β€” “Is that gluten-free? What about cross-contamination?”

For self-catering, REWE, Edeka and Kaufland carry a glutenfrei range, the drugstores dm and Rossmann stock gluten-free staples, and a pharmacy (Apotheke) can help in a pinch.

The dedicated spot β€” 100% gluten-free

Feinkost Galerie Heldt (Altstadt)

Freiburg’s gluten-free anchor. Tucked on the pretty Fischerau in the old town, this is a dedicated gluten-free deli and bakery β€” fresh bread and small baked goods plus fine-food and pantry items, made and sold without wheat on site. The wider gluten-free selection of the Heldt family’s two addresses, and the safer bet for a coeliac. Fischerau 8, 79098 Freiburg. Kitchens that get it right

Das Kartoffelhaus (celiac-aware, separate GF menu)

A cosy Freiburg institution built around the potato β€” which is a gift to coeliacs, since so much of the menu is naturally gluten-free to begin with. It’s a mixed kitchen, but staff are trained and it keeps a dedicated gluten-free menu, with its own gluten-free page online. Say you’re coeliac and confirm the setup when you order. Pizzeria Bellosguardo (gluten-free pizza & pasta)

A warm, rustic pizzeria out at Bischofskreuz that’s well-regarded in the coeliac community for its gluten-free pizza and pasta. A mixed kitchen, so tell them clearly you’re coeliac and ask how they keep the gluten-free order separate β€” then enjoy a proper pizza with two terraces to choose from. Hermann CafΓ© (StΓΌhlinger)

A relaxed cafΓ© near the StΓΌhlinger side of the centre with gluten-free options on the menu β€” a handy stop for coffee and something to eat that isn’t an afterthought. As with any mixed cafΓ©, confirm the cross-contact setup for baked goods. Wentzingerstraße 15, 79106 Freiburg. Source: venue listing, verified 1 Aug 2026.

Eating in the Black Forest, gluten-free

Two things to know before you tuck in. The regional sweet everyone mentions β€” Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte (Black Forest gateau) β€” is built on wheat sponge, so it’s out; and Baden-Swabian classics like Spätzle, Maultaschen and Flammkuchen are wheat too. The wins: Baden is one of Germany’s great wine regions (wine is naturally gluten-free), grilled meats and potato dishes are widely gluten-free, and Freiburg’s strong organic and vegetarian scene means more kitchens than average are used to allergen questions. Always confirm nothing is floured, crumbed or fried in shared oil.

Beyond the shortlist β€” the full guide

This is our editors’ shortlist for a smaller, greener city. Before you go

Freiburg is the gateway to the Black Forest and the Kaiserstuhl wine villages β€” beautiful day trips, but small-town kitchens may be less familiar with coeliac needs, so lead clearly with “Ich habe Zöliakie” and carry a dining card. German beer is brewed from barley or wheat, so ask for a glutenfreies Bier by name where you can. And even a well-set-up kitchen deserves a ten-second conversation β€” staff change and menus evolve.

Every venue here was cross-checked on 1 August 2026. Kitchens change; if you spot something that’s moved on, tell us and we’ll re-check β€” that’s how this guide stays honest.
